The day I got my ears pierced was one of the best days of my life—or, at least, that is what I would have told you when I was eight years old, leaving Claire’s with burning red earlobes, a bottle of saline solution, and a 10-pack of shimmering studs to my name. Since then, I’ve pierced my ears several more times and expanded my earring collection to include a range of trendy and timeless designs.

I have nine piercings in total and, while I used to be a strictly studs girly, I made the switch to hoop earrings a few years ago and have never looked back. Now, I have a couple of pairs I rarely take out, plus a few additional styles for special occasions when I want to switch things up.

I like wearing hoop earrings in my first and second holes and usually opt for huggie or small hoop styles that are lightweight and easy to wear with anything. Although, as a child of the ’90s and 2000s, I, of course, love the occasional oversized hoop look, too.

Hoops are great for a few reasons. First, if you’re someone who lives in your earrings, you don’t have to worry about the back of your head getting poked by a post when sleeping or wearing over-the-ear headphones (that is, as long as you’re not wearing push-back hoops). Sometimes, I wear a pair of solid gold hoops in my first and second holes on one ear, and a gemstone-encrusted design (in the same size) on the other ear, or I mix and match with one gold hoop and one gemstone hoop on either ear. I’ve also worn single hoops in my cartilage and tragus piercings to create a more unique stack.
